Located in No.220 Xiheyan in Xicheng District, neighbour to Tiananmen Square in the east, linked with Liulichang Culture Street in the south, Zhengyici Theater is an ancient and historic theatre of more than 300 years old. It is the only wooden theatre that is well-preserved in China. It is a milestone in the development of the theatre in China, praised by scholars as: “the living fossil of Chinese cultural history “, with a high visit and historical and cultural research value.

Famous Beijing Opera artists Cheng Changgeng, Tan Xinpei, Mei Lanfang and others had performances here. First built in the 27th year of Emperor Kangxi period. The Temple Theater has witnessed the formation and development in the history of Beijing Opera. The performances are only on weekends.

The Zhengyici Theatre covers an area of 1000 square meters, all made of wood. It faces south; the stage keeps the original style open in three directions. Opposite the stage is the bilevel-watching pool holding about 200 opera fans watching operas and drinking teas. Zhengyici became a significant window for international friends to get more ideas about China and the Old Beijing lifestyle.
