Plot Summary:
“Overturning the Chariots”, also known in Chinese as Tiao Hua Che (挑滑车), is a classic martial piece in Peking Opera that showcases spectacular acrobatics and stylized combat. Set during the Northern Song Dynasty, the story follows the legendary general Yang Yansi, the sixth son of the loyal and heroic Yang Family.

In the play, General Yang is sent on a mission to fight off invading forces from the Western Xia (Xi Xia) Kingdom. He single-handedly encounters an ambush of enemy soldiers riding chariots. In a breathtaking display of martial arts, somersaults, and dynamic stage combat, Yang Yansi bravely challenges the odds and manages to overturn the enemy’s chariots one by one, ultimately defeating the attackers.

The performance is not driven by dialogue but by movement. It is one of the most physically demanding Peking Opera plays, emphasizing strength, agility, and precise timing. This piece is often performed by highly skilled wusheng (martial role) actors, and is a favorite in Peking Opera showcases for its thrilling visual impact.
